Being a Mentor: Outline

Agony's mentoring program aims to ensure that every new joiner to the corporation has a more experienced pilot to function as a guide during their first few months in the corporation. Once the applicant is interviewed and accepted into corp, the mentor coordinator for the respective squadron will assign the new trial a mentor. Mentors are expected to watch over their mentee and review their application threads until the mentee gets promoted to Core.

Mentor Responsibilities

Mentors have a number of responsibilities which are outlined below. However, the single most important responsibility is to take the time to make the new joiners feel an integral part of the Agony corporation.

Try to make contact with your mentee sometimes during his or her first week in Agony. Best way to approach this is by scheduling a one-on-one talk over voice. Figure out the best way to keep in touch from there on, review mentee's application thread every week, read comments left there by other members and get in contact with the mentee if any problems arise.

When making contact with the mentee for the first time, you should cover the following:

  1. Make sure that the mentee has voice setup, Forum access, and in-game Trial roles assigned. Recruiters should make requests for these, but in case something has gone wrong double check with the recruit. Help mentee setup voice including ticker and phonetic. Go over updating mentee's account Settings on Agony forums to add names of main character and mentee's alts. Go over what mentee has to do to get any of his or her out-of-corp alts set blue.
  2. Double check that mentee knows that he or she should make an AFG post in his or her squadron subforum if he or she plans to be absent for 1+ week. If mentee decides to leave the corp then he or she should pm squadron director and mentor or make a goodbye thread in lounge.
  3. Go over squadron's promotion requirements with your mentee. Explain to mentee what we are looking for during trial period that will ensure that he or she gets promoted.
  4. Ask the mentee about his or her previous pvp experience as well as any goals and plans for the future. What roles would mentee like to try out in gangs? What aspects of game play would he or she like to participate in within Agony? Inform recruit about opportunities within Agony that recruit can use to achieve these goals.
  5. Encourage the mentee to take active roles in gangs. Explain to mentee that he or she can practice giving intel reports, scouting, tackling in low pressure environment during Agony's decentalized gangs.
  6. Encourage the mentee to strive to achieve specialization and expertise in 1-2 pvp roles.
  7. Offer advice on how to make bookmarks and let mentee know that he can ask for a pre-made bookmark set.
  8. Show mentee how to navigate around Agony's wiki.
  9. Ensure that the mentee knows about certifications, why we have them and which ones are available. Help mentee go over the certs.
  10. Ensure that the mentee passes the 3 minutes scan test.
  11. Make sure trial knows about being in AU_Intel channel when online.
  12. Ensure that the mentee signs up for remaining PVP-U classes which he or she hasn't attended yet.
  13. Encourage the mentee to actively participate on voice and in corp activities.
  14. Briefly go over Agony's corporate structure and organization, our Rules of Engagement, and how hangar access works.
  15. If mentee needs to make ISK, offer advice on what are the best ways of doing so with Agony.
  16. Offer advice on ship setups.
  17. Optional: Offer to do a character sheet evaluation especially if your mentee is a newer player. If mentee agrees, ask them for their character sheet and advise on what support skills need to be trained up and how to progress towards his desired pvp specialization areas.

Sample Rejection PMs

Hey XXX

Unfortunately it has been decided that you will not receive Core membership in Agony and you will be removed from the corp. This decision was not made easily as you appear to be a fairly skilled pilot. We also realize that RL > Eve and your extended AFG's, while they keep you from becoming a Core member, do not ban you from joining us in the future. We simply cannot make an informed decision after nearly four months of trial membership. If you need any assistance in moving assets out of H6 or Shintaht please let us know when you can and we would be more than willing to help.

Best wishes for the future,
Olozim

Hey XXX
We realise you are extremely busy with university at the moment, so myself and Echo management have decided that it's best for you to drop corp now and come back when you have some time to dedicate to becoming CORE. It's not just one thing, but we feel that you haven't been putting the required effort into being part of Agony. Making CORE is a natural progression, rather than something that should be pushed. We'll give you a few days of blue status to get your ships out - I'm sure Eomar will be happy to give you a hand with that if you ask him. Anyways, it's been a pleasure; fly safe, and perhaps see you again in the future.
