Comparison of best named and Tech II modules
Fully Tech II fitted ships are the envy of any new and inexperienced player in EVE. However, disregarding faction and officer mods, you are not guaranteed the best possible fit simply by fitting all Tech II mods. There are a lot of cases where best named Tech I mods are just as good as, and maybe even better than the Tech II version. This may seem illogical (and arguably it is) but this is the world of EVE, and things are not always as straight forward as one would hope or expect. The experienced player will often use a mix of Tech I and Tech II mods to get the most out of their ship. This guide aims to make this process easier by comparing all best named Tech I mods with their Tech II counterpart.
Common Advantages:
- Cap – Uses less cap either due to a smaller activation cost per cycle and/or due to a longer cycle time
- CPU – Requires less CPU to be installed
- PG – Requires less Power Grid to be installed
- None – The module has no obvious merit to taking it over its competition
Based on the relative performance of the best named and Tech II modules compared the module type is given a color code as explained below. These should not be taken too seriously. Some players may feel differently or choose to fit a best named over a Tech II for fitting reasons or to conserve cap. I have focused mostly on the intended purpose of the module as opposed to easy fitting or low cap use. It is also worth keeping in mind that Tech I modules generally handle overloading better than Tech II modules do. This has, however, not been taken into account in this article.
The Tech II module outperforms the best named one with regards to primary attributes
The Tech II module may outperform the best named one on certain attributes, but the best choice is ship/skill dependent
The Tech II module fails to outperforms the best named one (or the best named performs better)
The module has no notable difference between best named and Tech II |

Notes
[Mi] | This attribute advantage is specific to the Micro-sized module |
[S] | This attribute advantage is specific to the Small-sized module |
[M] | This attribute advantage is specific to the Medium-sized module |
[L] | This attribute advantage is specific to the Large-sized module |
[He] | This attribute advantage is specific to the Heavy-sized module |
[Du] | This module uses less cap due to a longer cycle duration. |
[Ammo] | Tech II guns, unlike their Tech I counterparts, are able to fire Tech II ammo. This results in greater damage modifiers than even faction ammo can provide. There are also specialization skills that increase the damage done by your Tech II guns. |
[1] | Warded <Racial> Backup Cluster I is also a best named Sensor Backup Array. The only difference between these two items seem to be their name. They are both meta 4 items with the exact same stats, requirements and function. |
[2] | Except Modal Light Electron Particle Accelerator I and Modal Light Ion Particle Accelerator I |
[3] | Except 75mm Prototype I Gauss Gun |
[4] | There are some classes of Large, Medium, and Small Beam Lasers that include a Heavy, Medium, or Light between “Modulated” and “Energy” in the name of the weapon. Suffice to say that “Modulated” is the key word in all of the Best Named Beam Lasers. |
[5] | There are some classes of Large Autocannons that replace “Autocannon” with “Repeating Artillery”. |
[6] | Small autocannons are an exception and do not provide an advantage on PG requirements. |
[7] | There are some classes of Large, Medium, and Small Artillery Cannons that include a Heavy, Medium, or Light before the 'Scout' key-word. |
[8] | Rocket Launchers are an exception and do not provide an advantage on PG requirements. |
[9] | Heavy Assault Launchers are an exception and do not provide an advantage to capacity.</ref>, ROF<ref>The missile launcher specialization skills give a rate of fire bonus. |
