Introduction

Historically, the great strength of a destroyer (and particularly the Thrasher) was their alpha strike - they fired slowly, but hit hard. Since artillery has an alpha strike greater than any other weapon system, the thrasher simply outclassed all the other destroyers for this role, and Wolfpack classes were run using Thrasher-centric fleets. Since the Crucible expansion in November 2011, destroyers have been buffed - they're smaller (and harder to hit), and they also kick out a lot more damage than they used to.

The current Wolfpacks class uses the HSSR fleet doctrine (High Speed, Short Range). This kind of fleet takes advantage of the high damage output that destroyers offer, along with their high speed relative to ships like cruisers and battlecruisers in order to swarm over fleeing targets. The key aspects are as follows:

  • High speed (MWD recommended, speed rigs or speed mods are a plus)
  • High damage output at short to mid range (close range weapons are fine, as are long ranged weapons with close range ammo -- optimal + falloff should be in the 5-10km range)
  • Tank (try to fit a medium shield extender or failing that an armour plate, plus a damage control)
  • Webs and Scrams in any spare mid slots.

There are no 'standard' fits for the HSSR Wolfpack fleet, and any Destroyer hull is a viable choice. Suggested setups for each type are provided as a starting point, though you may want to experiment flying it before the class and refit to your taste (for example, many people prefer 400mm armor plates to 200mm).

Suggested HSSR Setups for PVP-WOLFPACKS

Thrasher

The Thrasher is the fastest destroyer in the fleet, with excellent damage and a spare mid slot for tackle. A solid choice, and very easy to fit.

Coercer

The Coercer had superb damage and excellent damage projection (if you switch to scorch, you have an optimal of about 15km). It is limited to one mid-slot which means it should not fit tackle for this gang type.

Catalyst

The Catalyst has the best "on-paper" damage per second with Void, though you'll probably want to use Null most of the time simply due to the short range that both Void and Antimatter give you. Null lets you start firing earlier and you don't need to orbit as close. The Catalyst can be shield tanked, but it is very difficult to fit that way. Bring a rep drone to help out your fleet mates.

Cormorant

The Cormorant has lots of mid slots for tackle etc, but is difficult to fit. Out of all the destroyers, the Cormorant has the lowest damage output, is slowest, and easiest for others to hit because of its relatively large signature radius. While it excels as a long range platform, it would be sensible to select one of the other ships for HSSR if you have the choice.
