Being a Mentor

Agony's mentoring program aims to ensure that every new joiner to the corporation has a more experienced pilot from within their own squadron to act as their guide during their first few months in the corporation. Mentors will be expected to guide the Trial member until they are promoted to Core.

The most effective mentors are those who want to do the job voluntarily. As such, there are no requirements to be a mentor other than being a Core member and voluteering for this job. If you want to be a mentor, simply volunteer to be such when you see a new applicant accepted into corporation or alternatively let the Mentor Coordinator of your squadron know that you are looking for mentees.

Mentor Responsibilities

Mentors have a number of responsibilities which are outlined below. However, the single most important responsibility is to take the time to make the new joiners feel an integral part of the Agony corporation. All mentors should make sure that they cover the following aspects with their mentee as soon as possible.

  1. Make sure that the mentee gets Vent and Forum access. Recruiters should request for the to be set up for their recruits, but in case something has gone wrong double check that the recruit indeed has everything set up. Help mentee setup Vent account including ticker and phonetic.
  2. Try to make contact with your mentee sometimes during mentee's first week in Agony. Best way to approach this is by scheduling a one-on-one talk over Ventrilo. From there figure out the best way to keep in touch from there on and keep the contact regular.
  3. Ask the recruit about their previous pvp experience as well as their goals and plans for the future. What roles would they like to try out in gangs? What aspects of game play would they like to participate in within Agony? Inform them about opportunities within Agony that they can use to achieve these goals.
  4. Go over squadron's promotion requirements with your mentee. Explain to mentee roughly what we are looking for during trial period that will help them get promoted.
  5. Monitor applicant's thread in Accepted Applications forum, and if there are any issues or problem areas, have a talk with your mentee about how to improve.
  6. Encourage the mentee to take active roles in gangs. Explain to mentee that he or she can practice giving intel reports, scouting, tackling in low pressure environment during Agony's decentalized gangs.
  7. Encourage the mentee to strive to achieve specialization and expertise in 1-2 pvp roles.
  8. Optional: Offer to do a character sheet evaluation especially if your mentee is a newer player. If mentee agrees, ask them for their character sheet and advise on what support skills need to be trained up and how to progress towards his desired pvp specialization areas.
  9. Offer advice on how to make bookmarks and let mentee know that he can ask for a pre-made bookmark set.
  10. Show mentee how to navigate around Agony's wiki.
  11. Ensure that the mentee knows about certifications, why we have them and which ones are available. Help mentee go over the certs.
  12. Ensure that the mentee passes the 3 minutes scan test.
  13. Ensure that the mentee signs up for remaining PVP-U classes which he or she hasn't attended yet.
  14. Encourage the mentee to actively participate on Vent and in corp activities.
  15. Briefly go over Agony's corporate structure and organization, our Rules of Engagement, and how hangar access works.
  16. If mentee needs to make ISK, offer advice on what are the best ways of doing so with Agony.
  17. Offer advice on ship setups.

Sample Rejection PMs

Hey Ven,

Unfortunately it has been decided that you will not receive Core membership in Agony and you will be kicked from the corp. This decision was not made easily as you appear to be a fairly skilled pilot. We also realize that RL > Eve and your extended AFG's, while they keep you from becoming a Core member, do not ban you from joining us in the future. We simply cannot make an informed decision after nearly four months of trial membership. If you need any assistance in moving assets out of H6 or Shintaht please let us know when you can and we would be more than willing to help.

Best wishes for the future,
Olozim
