Agony 2.0 Mentoring Program

The Agony mentoring program aims to ensure that every new joiner to the corporation has a more experienced pilot from within their own squadron to act as their guide into how Agony Unleashed operates and how to effectively kill other ships in PvP. This relationship will formaly remain until the new recruit has attained the rank of Lieutenant Commander.

Being a Mentor

The most effective mentors are those who want to do the job voluntarily. As such, there are no requirements to be a mentor other than to want to volunteer, be at least Lieutenant Commander in rank and to be prepared to honor your commitment to the next generation of Agony pilots. If you want to be a mentor then read the rest of this post so you know what you are getting into. Then, find the mentoring thread for your squadron and sign up.

Assigning Mentors

When a new application is accepted by an Agony Director, the new recruit will be assigned to a Squadron based on their time of play. At this stage they will then be assigned to a mentor within that squadron by the Squadron Admiral.

Mentor Responsibilities

Mentors have a number of responsibilities which are outlined below. However, the single most important responsibility is to take the time to make the new joiners feel an integral part of the Agony corporation. All mentors should make sure that they cover the following aspects with their mentee asap.

Mentors will be expected to guide the Ensign until they are promoted to Lieutenant Commander. At this point, they should be self sufficient within Agony although I fully expect informal links to remain.

  1. Make contact with a newly assigned mentee as soon as possible and keep the contact regular.
  2. Work out the best way to communicate (usually Vent) with your mentee and the best times to catch each other.
  3. Ensure that the mentee gets Vent and Forum access.
  4. Help mentee setup Vent access as a corporate member (including ticker and phonetic).
  5. Explain the Agony corporate structure and organisation, the ranks and responsibilities and how to get promoted.
  6. Explain the Agony Rules of Engagement.
  7. Help mentee with rules for Agony hangars and getting access to equipment
  8. Encourage mentee to actively participate on Vent and in corp activities.
  9. Appraise mentee of the Agony wiki and how to navigate around it.
  10. Ensure mentee signs up for remaining PVP-U classes which need to be attended.
  11. Ensure that mentee knows about certifications, why we have them and which ones are available.
  12. Help mentee obtain Basic PvP Operations and Agony Structure and Organisation.
  13. Offer advice on skill training in line with Agony class requirements, general Agony gameplay (XO, 360, local duties etc) and rank requirements
  14. Help mentee with general advice on how to play Eve
  15. Help mentee make money by letting them assist on missions, ratting, trading or offering advice etc.
  16. Offer advice on ship setups, how to run missions and live in 0.0 whilst on top of PA.
  17. Help the mentee get to Lieutenant Commander.

Chain of Command

Mentors have a responsibility to keep their Squadron Admirals appraised of their mentees progress. They will have a lot of information pertinent to promotion and so should keep the SA up to date. Stein Voorhees will manage the mentoring program at the Director level and will keeps tabs on the mentoring program from a corporate perspective. Mentors should, in the first instance, contact their SA with any questions or problems. However, Stein is more than happy to help out at any time if needed. Captains should also feedback at regular intervals to the co-ordinator to ensure a consistent approach to mentoring across Agony Unleashed.

Hints and tips on mentoring

  1. When ingame, have a seperate convo window open with your mentee. Can be useful for answering questions without disturbing voice comms in a Wolfpack or getting lost in general corp chat.
  2. Get a copy of your mentees skills using the Eve-Online character sheet or something like Evemon (can write skills info + training plan in text, html or xml). This will help you make some sensible suggestions on how to improve the mentees skills and setup a good training plan.
  3. When funds and skills allow,
    • help your mentee setup a jump clone and not to lose any implants. Teach them what happens to your learning speed if you loose your implants.
    • Help them make the trip and get through the gate camps. Assist them in creating the first couple of bookmarks.
  1. If you have more than one mentee, take them all in space, teach them and fly with them a lot. Make some kills if you can - teach them how they should use coms in combats, how to react in some situations, etc. It's easier for them, at least at the beginning to be in a small gang and ask questions, to be open minded and open mouthed.

Passing on Mentoring Experience

Obviously we will all learn things as mentors. If you have any tips and tricks you would like to share to other mentors (and the rest of the corp), please don't hesitate and update this wiki-entry.
